The straight discharge tube has an elongated cylindrical structure that displays the discharge along the length of the tube. This design is suitable for observing field distribution, direction, approximate active range, and changes across a longer linear area.
Because of its straight shape, the tube can also be positioned parallel or perpendicular to the field source to compare how orientation affects the visible response.
| Feature | Round tube | Straight tube |
|---|---|---|
| Glass shape | Spherical or rounded | Long cylindrical tube |
| Glow pattern | Concentrated within a broad central area | Distributed along the tube length |
| Viewing angle | Easy to observe from multiple directions | Best observed from the side |
| Field observation | General presence and relative strength | Direction, distribution and approximate active length |
| Orientation sensitivity | Relatively less directional | More useful for orientation comparison |
| Typical use | General testing and demonstration | Linear field comparison and distribution observation |
